It’s no secret this year I am on the path to simplify my life. A certain 12 month blog challenge may give it away. However with any planned changes and improvements, it can take time to build new habits and there are many new habits I am still working hard on building. One is my habit of saving things for a special day.
Yes, I’ve admitted on many occasions to being a hoarder. I am a sentimentalist and a memory keeper, reluctant to let go of anything that holds special memories or value. But sometimes it’s kind of ridiculous. Like not using my favourite scrapbooking paper because I’m saving it for that ‘special’ layout or hoarding the divine smelling body butter I got as a gift because it’s too nice for every day use. ARGH!!
Sounds pretty stupid right?
So here I am 5 years later with that same barely used body butter that kind of smells funky now because I kept it far too long and missed the opportunity to smell divine myself. Or that favourite scrapbooking paper is so not my style now and I can’t imagine what I will ever want to use it for. Hmm… now I’ve hoarded for no good reason.
Anyone else guilty of this? Of always waiting for that special occasion or just right moment to use something? WELL STOP IT!
I am here to tell you to stop hoarding stuff and start making the most of it. Treat today like that special day and tomorrow and the next day. Every day is special. Do you know why? BECAUSE YOU MAKE IT SPECIAL!
So part of the journey to simplify is to live each and every day like it counts so that we enjoy the things that are there to be enjoyed instead of putting them off for another day, month or year and possibly missing our opportunity completely. Today is as good a day as any to enjoy. There is no reason it can’t have it’s own little bit of special.
Eat that juicy looking strawberry before it goes bad. Drink that expensive champagne before it goes flat. Use that amazing smelling perfume before it starts to smell bad. Kiss those babies before they grow up too quick. It’s much easier to do it now than waste it forever.
Now, excuse me while I go and throw a bath bomb in the bath, put on a mud mask, read a good book, eat a block of chocolate, then smother myself in the best smelling moisturiser I own… (I would add that expensive bottle of wine to this scenario but nope… up the duff).
What are you guilty of hoarding for that special day? What changes are you going to make in order for every day to be it’s own little bit of special?
